A completed Horizon 2020 project that built an ontology ecosystem for standardised, FAIR data documentation in materials and manufacturing.
OntoCommons, “Ontology-driven data documentation for Industry Commons”, was a Horizon 2020 project that ran from November 2020 to October 2023, coordinated by TU Wien. It built the Ontology Commons EcoSystem: a structured set of ontologies and practices for documenting data in materials science and manufacturing so that datasets become findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable across domains and organisations.
The Industry Commons Foundation, whose name the project’s title carries, was a partner responsible for innovation and sustainability management: making sure the ecosystem the project built would outlast the project itself. That legacy thread, industrial data documentation as a commons, runs through much of ICF’s later work, from JUST Data to GRAPHIA.
