2023–2025 completed MTF Labs and ICF collaboration with MTF Labs, Industry Commons Foundation
A Vinnova-funded initiative that created annotation standards so datasets used for AI carry ethical documentation, judicious, unbiased, safe and transparent.
JUST Data stands for Judicious, Unbiased, Safe, Transparent: a set of annotation and metadata standards so that datasets used for AI and machine learning carry their ethics with them, the way FAIR data carries its findability. The starting observation is simple and uncomfortable: biased data does not just reflect inequality, it reinforces and multiplies it.
The project was funded by Vinnova and run as a collaboration between MTF Labs and the Industry Commons Foundation with Linköping University and the Innovative Materials Arena. It produced more than twenty JUST metadata categories, a beta annotation system, and a white paper on data documentation, tested in public through JUST Data Labs at GoCo Health Innovation City in Gothenburg in June 2024 and a JUST Industry Data Week at Linköping Science Park that September, running cross-domain experiments on Swedish health, space and industrial data platforms.
The funded project is complete; the framework lives on as an ICF methodology, carried into TRE4HealthAI, GRAPHIA and LUMEN.
