MusicBricks

2015–2016 completed Via Music Tech Fest, which incubated the project's tools with Stromatolite, Music Tech Fest

A Horizon 2020 project that carried music technology research out of the lab and into the hands of makers, through Music Tech Fest.

MusicBricks, “Musical Building Blocks for Digital Makers and Content Creators”, was a Horizon 2020 project that ran from January 2015 to June 2016, coordinated by Stromatolite, the London design innovation lab founded by Michela Magas, with partners including IRCAM, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Fraunhofer and TU Wien.

The idea was direct: Europe’s music technology research institutes were full of remarkable tools that never left the lab. MusicBricks packaged those research outputs as APIs, GUIs and tangible interfaces, and put them in the hands of creative developers and makers through the hackathons and labs of Music Tech Fest, incubating the most promising results towards market. The project’s approach to tracking who contributed what, the IP stack, became a method that the Industry Commons Foundation still uses in its research projects a decade later.
