New Music Strategies
2005–present ongoing Founder and author
A blog and consultancy on digital music strategy that advised the independent sector through its most disorienting decade, relaunched in 2026 for the AI one.
New Music Strategies began as a blog in 2005 and grew into a consultancy described in its prime as a pan-European digital music strategy think tank: advice for independent musicians, labels and the organisations around them on what the internet was doing to their world, delivered in plain language at a time when plain language on the subject was scarce.
Its most travelled artefact was The 20 Things You Must Know About Music Online, the free e-book downloaded around half a million times. Through NMS Dubber advised music-web companies from their earliest days, including Bandcamp from its inception, and co-founded Un-Convention, the independent music industry event series. The blog’s archive spans nearly two decades of the digital music argument; after a dormant period, the site relaunched in March 2026, opening with the essay “Music AI is not AI Music”, as the home of the 20 Things About Music AI project.
