Musical Chairs
2000s completed Producer
Half-hour radio portraits of New Zealand musicians, made for RNZ's Musical Chairs strand, from Dr Rock to the quiet giants of Auckland jazz.
Musical Chairs was Radio New Zealand’s long-running strand of half-hour music documentaries, each one a portrait of a New Zealand musician. Dubber made a run of them, and six survive publicly on his Mixcloud: profiles of the broadcaster Barry Jenkin, better known to a generation of New Zealand listeners as Dr Rock; the trumpeter Kim Paterson, whose Impending Journey had appeared on Tap Records; the saxophonist and flautist Nathan Haines; the singular street troubadour Luke Hurley; the singer and song teacher Caitlin Smith; and the jazz multi-instrumentalist Jim Langabeer.
They are each about twenty-six minutes: interview, archive and music, made in the plain-spoken portrait style of the strand. All six are playable here.
